Role of higher education in adapting to climate change
for
Establishing a regional network to develop a postgraduate educational programs on climate change adaptation
Concept
Adaptation has emerged as one of the most important concerns in global development agenda. How we adapt and the solutions we create to overcome climate change adverse impacts must be developed locally while being supported by regional and global knowledge and experiences. For adaptation strategies to evolve locally, local capacity development is essential. Postgraduate education is essential for developing the human resources and technical capacities needed for climate change adaptation. It is also where the necessary research can be conducted in applied research projects in partnership with implementing agencies and local communities.
Currently, the knowledge gap on adaptation is vast. The knowledge about adapting to climate change lies at an international level and is failing to reach those in the developing world who need it most. In this regard, the higher education sector in developing countries can play a critical role. Greater collaboration and information exchange among higher education institutions in the regions is also needed. Whether through research partnerships, student exchange, or collaborative degree programs (offering joint or dual degrees for example), more action is needed to create a rich exchange among them. These would not only connect stakeholders in the region, but also support the sharing and exchange of expertise, experience and data necessary for effective adaptation.
